Karate. Passion. Discipline. Denmark.
My dream is to represent Denmark on the biggest stage.
My name is Freja Maria Chung Jepsen. I am 16 years old and an elite karate athlete with a strong passion for karate, competition and continuous development.
Since 2022, I have represented Denmark as part of the SKIF Style National Team at both European and World Championships. I am currently the reigning European Champion.
Since 2025, I have also been part of the official Danish Karate Federation Kata National Team.
Now, I am taking the next step.
I am moving to Copenhagen to attend high school through the Team Denmark programme, allowing me to combine my education with elite sport while training alongside some of Denmark's best athletes.
My journey towards international medals has only just begun.
From passion to elite sport
Karate is more than a sport to me.
It is a way of challenging myself. Setting goals, working hard and constantly becoming better – both when training goes well and when it doesn't.
Since I started competing seriously, karate has grown from a passion into a major part of my life.
In 2022, I was selected for the SKIF Style National Team, and since then I have represented Denmark at international championships.
Today, I compete at elite level and work every day to develop as an athlete.
When passion becomes everyday life
Being an elite athlete at 16 requires much more than training.
My everyday life consists of school, 5–6 training sessions every week, travelling, competitions, physical preparation and a constant focus on improving.
At least twice a week, I travel to Dragør for training with some of Denmark's best karate athletes.
It means many hours on the road, time away from friends and family, and a daily life where planning, commitment and discipline are essential.
But it is worth it.
Because when I step onto the tatami, I know exactly why I do it.
I love the competition. I love the development. And I love karate.
Copenhagen. High School. Elite Karate.
My next major step is moving to Copenhagen.
There, I will attend Falkonergården Gymnasium, where I will become part of a dedicated Team Denmark environment together with other young elite athletes.
This gives me the opportunity to combine high school with my commitment to elite sport, while also being closer to the Danish elite karate environment.
It will allow me to train more closely with some of Denmark's best athletes and continue developing at the highest possible level.
It will be a big change.
But also a huge opportunity.
I am ready for the next level.
From European Champion to world-class athlete
I set ambitious goals.
In the short term, my goal is to win medals and valuable ranking points at the Nordic Championships, European Championships and World Championships.
In the long term, I want to develop into one of the best karate athletes of my generation.
And then there is the biggest dream:
THE OLYMPICS.
Karate has already been part of the Olympic Games, and my dream is for the sport to return to the Olympic programme.
If that opportunity comes, I want to be ready.
My ambition is to one day stand on the Olympic tatami and represent Denmark.
It's also about the person behind the athlete
Elite sport isn't only about results.
It is about discipline, courage, responsibility, perseverance and the ability to get back up when things don't go your way.
Karate has taught me to work towards long-term goals.
That small improvements every day can become great results over time.
And that you are never finished learning.
These are values I carry with me – on the tatami, at school and in life.
From the training hall to the international stage
My karate journey doesn't only happen at competitions.
I want to share the entire journey.
The training. The travelling. The competitions. The victories. The setbacks. Life as a young elite athlete. Moving to Copenhagen. And all the work that happens behind the medals.

Elite karate requires talent, hard work and resources.
International competitions involve significant expenses for flights, transportation, accommodation, entry fees, training camps and equipment. At the same time, daily training requires both time and transportation – including regular travel to Dragør.
